One third of the people who live in the city of Duluth are living in poverty or are considered to be working poor. Community Action Duluth is doing whatever it takes to help people who are struggling to cover basic needs.

The stories shared during the Community Leadership Meetings bring to life the personal triumphs and challenges of life in poverty. Shortly after hearing this story Jetaun Wheeler decided to get involved and used her voice by becoming a Community Action Duluth Board Member in 2009.

Sue Fry is a dedicated Ally/volunteer involved in our Matched Circles Program. Every month Ally/volunteers meet to share ideas and offer support to each other during Ally Support Meeting. Allies involved in Matched Circles have decided to become personally involved in the lives of working poor families who are working hard to get out of poverty, but continually falling short. Ally Support meetings are a time for reflection and as Sue would tell you, "They are a good place to build relationships."

What it Takes to Move Out of Poverty

Technically, the term poverty means “the state of being extremely poor,” which people naturally associate with a lack of money. Unfortunately, this narrow understanding may cause us to overlook non-monetary barriers that keep people within that state. We support helping those in poverty meet basic daily needs, however, Circles of Support focuses primarily on fostering significant relationships and meaning in people's lives to help them truly reach prosperity.

Participants in this program must make conscious decisions to change their lives. We help them establish trusting relationships with volunteer Allies. Together, they learn from each other's life experience. Through this dialogue and kinship, both Participants and Allies grow in understanding, and personal biases fade away. Allies gain a new perspective of the true definition of poverty, while Participants acquire the knowledge they need to make necessary changes. Collective action becomes the focus as we work together to find Solutions to End Poverty.
