One third of the people who live in the city of Duluth are living in poverty or are considered to be working poor. Community Action Duluth is doing whatever it takes to help people who are struggling to cover basic needs.

Get Involved!

Circles of Support is "Deep" one young man told us. We've have a collage of diverse groups of people from various ethic and socio-economic background. We spend time getting to know each other. We share a meal together similar to the way a family does. We share the experiences, victories and failures that may have happened during that day and the great part is that people listen to each other. By the way, did we mention that we eat together?
Tamikka Edwards listens just prior to sharing her story about her journey in poverty. Tamikka's worked as a personal care assistant in Duluth for two years while raising her four children. She has plans on becoming a nurse and opening a group home. Tamikka has the support of two strong Allies in her life and she is determined to make it ~ no matter what it may take. Kris Cook and Shelly Thygeson listen! People involved in Circles of Support are great listeners. They spend time together and practice intentional listening in a process called Listening Pairs. There are questions that we ask one another using listening pairs that will help us release the emotions that can get in the way of building diverse and inclusive relationships. The beauty of Circles of Support relationships are that at the same time Allies are working with individual families to move out of poverty, they are learning about systemic problems at levels that collude to hold economic, race and gender injustices in place.

Community Engagement

Circles of Support has adopted a Community Engagement strategy to mobilize the wider community in eliminating barriers that keep people in poverty. We host community dialogues, poverty reflection forums, poverty/ class simulations, race awareness workshops (RAW), and we offer a program called Getting Ahead-Duluth. We also present anti-racism workshops, forums, and poverty education opportunities.

We have embarked on a one-year poverty awareness campaign called “Pucks Against Poverty.” Our goal is to engage more than 5,000 people in community art projects, community dialogues, and neighborhood outreach efforts that raise awareness of issues and barriers that face the working poor in Duluth.

Monthly Meetings

We host two monthly meetings that are open to the public: Community Leadership Team (CLT) and the Big View. These meetings are public forums designed to organize the community around issues that impact people with low incomes. Our strategy is twofold: 1) sharing personal stories and personal experiences of Participants with low incomes during CLT and 2) calling the community to action and social activism during Big View meetings.

Community Leadership Team (CLT) (all are welcome) is held the third (3rd) Thursday of every month (5:30-8:00 p.m.). Engage in lively, interactive dialogue about barriers faced by people low incomes. We highlight the experience and the systemic oppression of navigating through daily life. At CLT, you will build and strengthen relationships across social class, through community education and topical meeting discussions.

In addition, CLT helps bridge social networks to support families with low incomes through creative assistance programming, social networking, and community education.

Big View (all are welcome) is held the last Thursday of every month (5:30-8:00 p.m.). Join a Community Action Solution Circle as we build community, heal divides, and organize to end poverty. During each Big View meeting, we outline strategies, tactics, and campaigns to address specific issues that were identified as issue areas by Participants with low incomes and their Allies. The issues fall within eight categories, with one group focusing on our public policy agenda:

  1. Childcare
  2. Education
  3. Jobs/Wages
  4. Transportation
  5. Financial Literacy / Credit
  6. Social Safety Net
  7. Housing
  8. Leadership - Public policy group focusing on the Ladders Out of Poverty bill and legislation

Please see Big View Issue Summary Page for issue updates.
