Community Action Duluth Creates 27+ New Green Jobs!

LPG

Seeds of Success – Community Action Duluth Urban Agriculture project is underway and growing food on 8 vacant lots throughout Duluth. 2 coordinators have been hired – Emily Kniskern and Michael Latsch – and together with interns, volunteers and City of Duluth Youth Employment Workers – we are turning these vacant lots into productive food growing oasis’s. Seeds have been sown and transplants have been planted in several sites. We hope to share some of the food with low-income people and the rest will be sold to local restaurants. Partnership with Zeppa Foundation. 6 summer green jobs.

Step-Up Apprentices – Two Community Action Duluth Construction pre-apprentices started working at Harbor Highlands (built to green community standards) this week. This is a paid pre-apprentice project utilizing residents of public housing and Section 8 with Johnson Wilson Construction and is a partnership with the Building and Construction Trades Council and affiliated labor organizations, the HRA, and LISC Duluth @ Work Green Jobs. 2 full time green jobs.

Green Duluth Summer Youth Energy Outreach Canvass – 12 Low-income youth will soon be going door-to-door in a Community Action Duluth project that educates people about neighborhood energy workshops, energy saving programs and low cost measures in the home. Once a week environmental work projects are a key component as well as skills development training. This is a partnership with Duluth Energy Efficiency Program, Comfort Systems, and MN Power. 13 summer green jobs.

MN Power Energy Efficiency  - Community Action Duluth and Minnesota Power have joined forces to encourage owners and tenants of income eligible multi-family rental buildings to conserve energy. On behalf of Minnesota Power, Community Action Duluth will perform outreach services to identify electric energy savings opportunities.  This includes metering refrigerators and documenting results for possible replacement, replacing incandescent lamps (bulbs) with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), replacing lighting fixtures with energy efficient options and hosting energy awareness events. One part-time green job.

Watershed Conservation Corps – Due to recently announced EPA grant, Community Action Duluth will be hiring 6 people to restore and protect the streams flowing through Duluth. This project applies the Civilian Conservation Corps model to implement habitat restoration projects on streams draining to Lake Superior. The approach provides marketable job skills for the un-and underemployed, while simultaneously helping land owners enhance aquatic habitat and biodiversity. The project leverages resources to provide employment, to encourage behavior change in riparian land owners and restores fragile cold water streams in the St. Louis River Area of Concern (AOC). A partnership with the St. Louis River Alliance. 6 full-time green jobs.
