One third of the people who live in the city of Duluth are living in poverty or are considered to be working poor. Community Action Duluth is doing whatever it takes to help people who are struggling to cover basic needs.

Community Action Duluth held a news conference outside the Gerald W. Heaney Federal Building, Friday, January 27, to celebrate Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day and highlight the start of Free Tax Prep January 31. FOX-21, KBJR and WDIO sent reporters and photographers. A project of the Tax Site and Community Engagement teams, the news conference and its lead-up press releases generated television coverage as well as print articles in the Budgeteer paper. We picked the location because there's an IRS office inside the Federal Building. It also has a view of the Ordean Building, location of the newest tax site!

Comments From Some of Our Volunteers:

Tax Volunteer"I truly felt like I was making a difference."

"The volunteers were great to work with and the clients were so appreciative. I had a great experience."

"I loved volunteering at the tax site. The people I worked with were great! The people we served were great! The food was great!"

"The first return I did was for a young couple who just found out they were going to have a baby. The excitement they had when finding out they were getting a refund was enough to get me hooked on trying to help people through free tax prep."

"I met other great volunteers, and I learned a lot about tax law. I also learned a lot about the struggles of people trying to get by on several part-time jobs and other challenges."

"I enjoyed the volunteers and their great spirit and dedication. It was fun to help families receive the Earned Income Tax Credit refunds."
